CIVIL War Letter Meeting The President, Cabinet And The Generals New Years 1863

An Original Civil War Letter from'Arch Cook, Washington, DC, January 5, 1863 to his brother. He writes that he Is happy the brother had a good Christmas, as he also attended Christmas parties. He reports that New Year's Dy is general open house for everyone in Washington, and he celebrated with wines, eatables and escorted a young lady, but and despite the nice time would much rather be at home.

He relates that he "called on the President and most members of his Cabinet, all the foreign Ministers" and " most of our Generals were at the President's - take them all together they looked quite fine". He write that he has a pleasant roommate, had a nice dinner but nothing as nice as what brother must have had. He reports there is nothing new from the Army of the Potomac and hopes they will make a successful move soon. He will send brother some newspapers and some documents when he can get them- he has been very busy at the Office, only got up to Washington twice this session but hopes to return and get brother " some papers, etc". He asks to give his love to Mother and all the family and especially Uncle Joseph, Mary, and Mary Ann Greer.
