Captain Henry Coddington Meyer w was wounded in action and awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for heroism at Petersburg, Virginia, June 17, 1864. An Original Civil War Letter from Frank A Smith to to his friend Dr John Moore McCalla at Seminary Hospital, Georgetown, DC seeking help for Captain Henry Meyers, 24th New York Cavalry "wounded in back and now at your Hospital',, "a brave young officer" and nephew of the writer's'Chief", who is distressed by his wounds, wants to learn of his condition.

W details, asks he stop at his bedside for r the sake of an old friend. He also congratulates Dr McCalla on his marriage. He reiterates the hopes that a" word from the Doctor will heal the heart of old "Cod", and "You will and receive a cheer from your old friend.

The Letter is sgd Frank S Smith, 78 Broad St, TB Coddington Company, New York. Comes with Young Meyer's war record- he enlisted without parental consent and was cited for heroism, saving the life of a comrade under heavy fire at Petersburg despite severe wounds. The 24th served as both cavalry and infantry. (Young Meyer was also saber wounded in a prior cavalry charge). Postwar young Captain Meyer became a public health advocate and published his memoirs.

4pp 8 x 5 ink, with minor age stains, Overall VG. The Postal Cover is torn. From the estate of Dr McCalla, a noted Civil War surgeon and public health advocate. The writer, Frank Smith was with the firm of Thomas Butler Coddington, a prominent NYC merchant. General Orders and other imprints.
