Lew Wallace of Crawfordsville, Indiana was a notable Civil War commander winning promotion for the Battle of Monocacy, but is best remembered as the postwar author of "Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ" and as Governor of New Mexico where he met with Billy the Kid and tried to negotiate his pardon. An original Civil War Union Army General Order issued by the War Dept, Washington, March 12, 1864, promoting Major General Lew Wallace to command of the 8th Army Corp at the onset of Grant's Virginia Campaign of 1864.
