Fort Meigs, Maryland was a Gun Battery built to defend Washington. The Fort is located at Fort Washington Park, Prince George County, Maryland. An Original Civil War Letter from a soldier, MP Johnson (Milton P Johnson, 9th Rhode Island) at Fort Meigs Md. August 14, 1862 to his Father- he reports he is now well and ready to start home on furlough and has been issued 11 days ration with 3 day supply of hardtack which should bring him home, likely about the 26th of this month.

He reports that a man from Company C died last night, and He hopes Father will stay at Providence, and to advise Henry to stay at Providence now. He ends the letter with request to give his love to Mother, and signs, Your's Affectionately, MP Johnson. The Letter bears a postscirpt- He reports a letter form Harriet who fears he shall be Drafted and tells her not she is nt to worry. He is writing by candle light with a bed for his desk.

He signs again Good Night MP Johnson. Comes w service info for Private Milton P Johnson, Company B, 9th Rhode Island, a 3 Month Volunteer.

Union Army soldiers were subject to the April, 1862 Conscription Act, which could draft them in order to extend their length of service But Milton was not drafted. 3pp 8 x 5 ink. Age stains, folds, edge wear, Overall VG.
