David and Jonathan Knowles of Allegan County, Wayland, Michigan, enlisted together into Company H, 19th Wisconsin Volunteers. An Original Civil War Letter from David at Hamptpn Hospital, Virginia, Sept 18, 1864 to his sisters Mary, reporting that he was glad to receive both their pictures, hopes that they attend Sabbath School, and learn all that you can so as to be able to write to me. He reports he will be home in the Spring, and hopes that if the boys go away for the wars they will have a good time soldiering.

He also hopes John will leave drinking and gambling alone, and if he keeps on the good side of the officers he all will be right. He also asks if Mrs Sayers has got any Girls, how old and and are they Pretty? The writer says he can' write to both sisters as he has only one stamp, and signs off David Knowles To Mary and Anna Knowles. Edge wear, age spots, Overall VG David and Jonathan served together in the Petersburg Campaign, until 1864 when David was hospitalized and transferred into the Veteran Reserve Corps, serving to the End of the War.

Brother Jonathan was wounded and captured at Fair Oaks, Virginia, and died a POW at Richmond. Comes w service info- Many of the men from Company H were from Wayland, Michigan. Their younger Brother John did join up in 1864 with the 28th Michigan and saw action in the North Carolina Campaigns incl the Battles of Kinston and Wise's Fork.
