CIVIL War Missouri Soldier Letter Pulaski Tennessee 1863

Pulaski Tennessee is an historic city in Giles County, and site of skirmishes during the Franklin-Nashville Campaigns. An Original 4pp Civil War Letter from Union Private Henry P Humphrey, 18yh Missouri (Union) Volunteers at Pulaski, Giles Co. Tenn, November 26, 1863 to his sister- he reports he received her letter before he left Corinth (Mississippi) but was unable to answer, has had a lot of hard marching since, our Division Train carries 20 days ration of Hard tack & Salt, our beef, mutton and hogs were captured on the march and we are driving them on foot, we crossed the River at Eastport, Tennessee which had been a nice town but half the town has been burned, at Lauderdale, Alabama we burnt the cloth factory- some of the women cried but it done no good, we had all the sweet potatoes and hogs we can eat but missed our Hard Tack ration which we turned up our noses at before but now tastes as good as pie. Pulaski is a nice place but the girls turn up their noses at live Yankees, - The girls at Corinth shed many tears when we left, some of our boys married Southern girls at Corinth and Pocahantas.

We are guarding the RR from Nashville to Decatur, our Pioneer Corps and mechanics are at work on the bridges. Direct letters to me at Pulaski Tenn via Nashville. The letter comes with a typed transcript. Private Humphrey and the 18th Missouri were present at the hanging of Sam Davis -- his trial was presided over by the Colonel of the 18th, Madison Miller, and Davis was hqnged at Pulaski the day this letter is written but he does not mention the hanging to his sister. (Ref Sam Davis Confederate Hero).

Comes w service info for Prvt Humphrey, who joined the 18th Missouri in 1861. NOTE: Any repair to a paper item is listed. I use only museum curator approved archival repair tape.
