Major John Cassels, 11th Pennsylvania Cavalry, Civil War Provost Marshal for Fort Monroe, Virginia, was Belle Boyd's jailer; she wrote of him, and his love affair with a sister of CS General Lunsford Lomax, held prisoner at the Fort. General Lomax' daughters were held along with spy Belle Boyd under Provost Marshal's supervision at Ft Monroe.

Julia and Anne (Nannie) were interned were at Fort Monroe by General Benjamin "Beast" Butler. An original Civil War Pass issued by Captain Cassels as Provost Marshal at HQ Dept of Virginia and North Carolina Fort Monroe, Va Guards Pass Mr E. Young Inside the Fort and Return Good for this Day Only, by Command of Major General Butler with Captain John Cassels authorization stamp as Provost Marshal, dated February 17, 1864. Comes w service info for Captain Cassels and a copy of one of the passes Major Cassels wrote for the Lomax sisters. (now in a private collection).

Captain Casels is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. NOTE: Any repair to a paper item is listed.
