An unusual Civil War soldier letter from Private Daniel W Loring, a prisoner, and patient in the US Army General Hospital at Frederick City May 6th, 1862, to his company commander Captain James E Ashcorft asking for his help in getting a discharge, Private Loring writes that he has been a patient in the army hospital for the past 4 months, "under unusual circumstances" being confined in a "prisoner guards hands" while sick and unfit for duty. Battery C of The 3rd New York Light Artillery was organized as part of the 19th New York Infantry at Seneca Falls, NY as part of the 19th New York Infantry in 1862, under Captain James Ashcroft and served in the New Berne, North Carolina area or much of the War. Comes w service info for Private Loring who apparently suffered from the terrible march through Maryland 4 months earlier. He was honorably mustered out a month after he wrote Captain Ashcroft.

Captain James Ashcroft was a notable Seneca Falls citizen. Colonel James Ledlie commander of the 3rd NYLA at the time was the notorious commander cashiered drunkenness his role in the1864 Petersburg Crater Assault. 3pp ink with striking color patriotic illustrated letter sheet, approx 8 x 5.
