Civil War Period Marine Signal Lantern, reference CSS Hunley
Scarce heavy tin lantern with fluted ventilator at top, clear bulls-eye lens at front, original flat-bottom oil burner housed within the cylinder base, handle, and rotating tin cover to moderate light output. Very good overall condition with all original parts/pieces. A similar lantern (as pictured) was recovered and conserved from the doomed CSS Hunley submarine. It is on display at the CSS Hunley Museum in North Charleston, South Carolina.
Well worth a visit if you ever get to Charleston! Measures 7 1/4" high (not including handle), measures 9" (including handle), 3 1/4" base diameter, 4 1/4" wide.
