CIVIL War Port Royal South Carolina New York Officer Letter 1863

Captain Charles A Moore served 3 years with the 47th New York Washinghton Grays, and at times commanded the regiment which saw action at the battles of Olustee, Florida and at Cold Harbor and the Siege of Petersburg. An original Civil War Letter from Moore, Thursday P. January 14, 1863 to his wife Josie, with Postal Cover postmarked Port Royal, South Carolina with stamp, re the news of their beloved children and thanks our Heavenly Father for the blessings of their family, opportunities to share his spiritual talents and good conduct in their conversations, and hopes for a future with her. Hr finishes with his sentiments of his appreciation to unburden himself to her during their separation.

He is longs to be with her again in this life and notes that he is writing from the Chaplain's tent. He also reports his disappointment that Drinking and Swearing prevail in the Army and the Camp. The letter appears to be complete but is unsigned.

It came with other letters from this officer and is in his hand. 2pp 8 x 11 ink, overwritten on both sides to save paper. Edge wear, age stains, Overall VG. Edge wear, age spots, Overall VG.
