CIVIL War Presentation Grade Staff & Field Officer Sword Tomes Son & Melvin

CIVIL WAR PRESENTATION GRADE M 1850 STAFF & FIELD OFFICER SWORD TOMES SON & MELVIN. THIS ONE IS A MASTERPIECE! It isn't often these days that you see a sword that looks like this beauty after 150 years.

This sword has that look. This sword is a very finely crafted high grade officers sword that would've been worn by a well-to-do Union officer. The blade of the sword is still full-length at 32-3/4ths inches. It is one of the high-quality blades that were manufactured in Soligen, Germany by the firm of W.

The base of the front side of the blade has the retailer's marking of the famous New York Firm of Tomes, Son & Melvain. Each side of the blade has the etching that still has pleasing detail. The front side of the blade has the Union Eagle with the "E Pluribus Unum" national motto on the ribbon coming from her beak. The back side of the blade has the beautiful ornate "US" lettering in the middle.

The guard of the sword as well as the pommel cap are also a very high quality manufacture. In addition to the fine casting you can see that each of the pieces have the extra hand chisel work to add more detail to each piece. The hand guard has the massive basket with the acorns and the "US" lettering.

The quillion of the sword has the design of an eagle. The handle of the sword is original and still beautifully intact and is constructed of a two-piece design of cast brass with some of the original silver wash. What makes the handle really stand out is that on the front side it has the classic styling that shows the standing Lady Liberty with the sword in her hand.

On the back side of the grip it has the applied red "Jewel" stone. These stones were used in the very high quality swords such as these.

The sword is accompanied by the original scabbard that is also constructed with superb quality. The body of the scabbard is made of steel with the ornate heavy mounts and drag constructed of brass. The body of the mounts are made of brass with the copper applied to make it more beautiful and ornate. The mounts and drag have the matching floral and patriotic designs.

The drag of the sword the soldier underneath the patriotic design. The original throat is still intact at the top of the scabbard.

The hanger rings have the rope like design. As you can see, this sort displays beautifully from all angles. It is truly a Civil War work of art.
