Civil War regimental orders, March 31 1864, Jewish Col. Knefler, Indiana
Frederick Knefler, the highest ranking Jewish officer in the Union Army during the Civil War, dated March 31, 1864. The orders essentially direct cleaning of camps. Knefler enlisted in the Army in 1861, after having found int he Hungarian War of Liberation from 1848-49 in the revolutionary forces. After their defeat, his family fled to the U.

Knefler's father, Nathan, was a physician and a founder of the Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation, and they were among the earliest Jewish settlers in the area. See photos for item condition and please ask any photos before purchasing.
