CIVIL War Scandalous Women Vermont Soldier Letter 1864

St Julien's Creek near Portsmouth was the locale for this Civil War Letter from Private C. The letter begins "Julians Creek VA August 8 1863" to his Mother- he writes that he is in good health, asks she not send him a box until she hears from him. He also asks if "Savber" Sabrina? Has any such stories told about her -"if there is any truth in them I shall make short work with her", but Sayber doesn't know how Lydia is carrying on. He says if this war goes on two years more there should not be any (not) killed and that the women would not have.

A husband to live with them"- "if they all thought as I do, a person is known by the company they keep and if Saber goes with Lydia herself she shall not be thought any better than Lydia. He closes "From your Son CM Merrill", then and asks her to write as soon and often as she can.

CH Merrill was a Federal soldier as Julien Creek was under Union occupation at this date. Comes w a complete typed Transcript. 4pp 8 x 5 ink. Minor stains, edge wear, Overall VG. The writer is serving in the Vermont Brigade but I don't know which regiment.
