Henry Spurr Taft served with the 15rth Massachusetts Volunteers in 1861, and was reassigned to the newly formed Signal Corp, where he commanded the first Signal Corps detachment ever to serve under fire- at Port Royal, South Carolina. Taft Co H 15th Mass Vol Asst Signal Officer, issued at Beaufort, South Carolina Feb 4, 1862, signed by Taft as "1st Lt 15th Mass and Uasst Signal Officer". Th Voucer lists his pay and also wages allotted to his "Colored" servant William Davidge. Approx 16 x 8.5 with age stains edge tears, archival repairs on reverse folds, Overall Good Condition.
