This original silver cigarette holder is a unique piece of history from the Civil War era. It was owned by a civil war soldier who fought and survied the Battle of Peachtree Creek which occured on Wednesday, July 20th 1864.
Engraved on the front is "Mie EX Raven, July 20th 1864" meaning either "ME OUT OF DEATH" or "WEDNESDAY OUT OF DEATH" ("Mie" is the abbreviation for Miercoles the Spanish word for Wednesday). "EX" can also translate as "NOT" and the engraving could simply mean: Me Not Dead. A few tranlations can be derived. This has survived the test of time but the soldier's name who owned it did not.My triple great grandfather was Benjamin James Tayman of the 91st PA, but I have not been able to solidfy a connection from him or a fellow officer to this holder. The item is an original and authentic. This would make a great addition to any collection of original period items or Civil War memorabilia. It is a remarkable piece that tells a story of survival and endurance during a pivotal moment in American history.
