An Original Civil War Letter from a semi-literate soldier, Private Edward J Hindmarch at Baltimore, February 14, 1863to his Mother- he received her letter, "rumitis" (rheumatism) isn't bothering him as much today. He reports they are building a Gunboat back of the hospital - "She is a very big boat", an 18 gunner. He went on a pass to Fort Federal Hill yesterday, to see the big guns and mortars, some mortars (so big) he could jump in. He hasn't been paid.

He got his Valentine from Wiley and thought a good deal of it. He doesn't know when he will be paid and asks her to send a dollar. Tell Jake to write me. He is glad that Mrs Shirling Bargas folks are all right. Please send my love and best respects to Charley, Wiley and you too.

He ends the letter with "Good by From your son Edward J Hindmarck". The letter has his postscript address from the US General Hospital West Building Baltimore Maryland Ward H. 2pp ink with colorful ptd logo "Regiment" filled in by the writer with regiment, company & date. Age spots, folds, Overall VG. Comes w service info and typed transcript- 18 yer old Edward of Geneva, new York enlisted August, 1862. He and his entire unit were was captured at the Surrender of the post at Harper's Ferry. Virginia and paroled the next month, and went on to serve the rest of the War including the Battle of Gettysburg where the 126th took heavy casualties. General Orders and other imprints.
