Private William E Hutchinson was one of 3 brothers to enlist for the War. William who lived in Bensen, NY Joined Company C, 51st New York Infantry in Sept 1861but was discharged, disabled a few months later. He recovered and re-enlisted with the 2nd New York Heavy Artillery, December, 1863. Six months later he was taken prisoner at Cold Harbor, Va, and sent Andersonville Prison, Georgia.

He only survived 3 months and is buried at Andersonville National Cemetery. An Original Letter from William at Benson, NY March 22, 1863, to brother John W Hutchinson (Co C, 115th NY). He writes re "Square" (John Mason, their brother-in-law also in the 115th NY). He reports that he has good sleighing w 4 ft deep snow so hasn't been able to visit Kate to pass his good news, of his getting "born again".

He also writes that he plans to visit their Uncle in Michigan, and asks that he please write, that it was a pleasure to hear from "Square"nd JWH. He says Lucy Buel sends her love, also that friend Bill Lefevre married Mary Lobdel and had a'big one as she is 47 years old. The letter is Signed "Your Affectionate Brother William E Hutchinson to John W Hutchinson".
