Private William E Hutchinson was one of 3 brothers to enlist for the War. William who lived in Benson, NY enlisted w the 51st New York Infantry, 1861 but was discharged, disabled.

He recovered and disliking farm work re-enlisted with the 2nd New York Heavy Artillery, December, 1863. Six months later he was taken prisoner at Cold Harbor, Va, and sent to Andersonville Prison, Georgia.

He only survived 3 months and is buried at Andersonville National Cemetery. An Original Letter from William, home at Benson, NY April 22, 1863 to brother John serving with the 115th NY- he reports he is well, got a letter from "Square" (Brother in Law John H Mason, also with the 115th NY). William reports the girls are so pleased with your gifts of shells and Helen wishes she could kiss you 1000 times hard, so I will kiss her for you.

Lucy says she would not be afraid to "kiss them thick black lips, she means n----r wenches", so you can kiss them. He writes that he is bored with farming. He exhorts John to keep up his spirits, and reports He has visited "Cate", (John's wife).
