CIVIL WAR SOLDIER LETTER NEW ORLEANS w NEW YEARS CARD & BEN BUTLER NEWS
An Original Civil War Letter from a soldier at Camp Parapet, Carrollton, Loiuisiana, bearing a color patriotic illus of the Federal eagle and shield, Dated Dec 30, 1862, from a soldier to his "brother". He reports that having received his letter, he is now his brother (in reference to a new brother-in-law:) The writer says he is happy to have the privilege of calling him "Brother".

He writes there is not much news here, but is hopeful that General Banks will do something soon, - he supposes the reader has heard that Banks has superseded Butler with 30,000 more men and that Butler has gone home, - we are glad of the change for the war has been for nothing but Speculation- Butler and his staff have made their lasting fortunes and that's about all. He ends the 2pp letter "from "your Brother A. The next 2 pages are addressed to his "Dear Sister from Camp Parapet, the same day - his company has been here to assist the ", the QM who has given them a new team of " 4 nice high strung horses for the big guns on the parapet" and he has been given the task to drive the team up to the regiment- we had gone 60 miles, then we strung the regt along 40 miles - he had to drive teams 30 miles every day until he was sent by the Doctor by boat to Sick Bay. He writes that the regiment is now 150 mile from here, and hopes he will be released soon to rejoin them-, he is glad she likes her new husband- they get along so well & hopes they and she will always love and respect each other, with "no cause to very curse her".

He wishes Daniel was here with him- he read the 16th Maine had been in a battle, and he has searched the papers for lists of killed and wounded. He asks "Brother" to write him oftener with news, and finishes by wishing him well.

He signs both letters "from your Brother "S. Minor edge wear, age stains, Overall VG. The letter includes a homemade New Years Card- a 2 x 2" January 1, 1863 New Year Greeting to "brother and sister" and signs it "Happy New Year to you all, S. This is the first home made soldier'Greeting Card I have seen.
