CIVIL War Stonewall Jackson Invades Maryland Letter To 115th Ny Soldier
An Original Civil War Letter from SW Deuel at Northville, New York Sept 12, 1962 to Private John W Hutchinson- he is happy to learn John is in "Good spirits & ready as I suppose must meet the Devil if he comes in the shape of a Rebel". Our war news is that Stonewall Jackson is in Maryland to save us the trouble of of going so far to dodge a few shells and send him the "double quick". Our army is now playing the part to send them on retreat in the same way as they commenced on the field at Bull Run last Spring. He warns John to "not march too quick when the time comes for shooting". The writer jokes that the news here is that the local men are scared of getting drafted for the volunteers are the ones in danger of getting killed which is preferable to getting wounded, so look out for your self. He also asks John to tell John H Mason (Hutchinson's brother-in-law, also same company, 115th NY) that he was too sick to talk to him, and asks John to tell him to write.

The letter is signed sgd S. 2pp 8 x 10" ink, edge tears and ink stains, bottom with a x 1" long hole, Overall VG.

Comes w service info- John W Hutchinson enlisted August, 1862, was captured with most f the 115th NY at Harper's Ferry, Virginia, paroled to Camp Douglas, Illinois, exchanged and died of fever in 1863 at Beaufort, South Carolina the following summer and is buried in the National Cemetery there. Pvt Jphn H Mason, also of Company C, 115th NY from Day, NY served 3 years, was POW & paroled, Harpers Ferry, and wounded in action at Olustee, Florida. Northville, now Northampton, Fulton County New York was a few miles miles from the farm of the 3 Hutchinson brothers who all served in the War. The writer of the letter may be Seneca Deuel of Northville, father of 4 boys who also served. This letter came with others from the Hutchinson brothers.
