The history and symbolism on the token are powerful, with the inscription at the center of the reverse reading &###x201C;ARMY & NAVY. &###x201D; That inscription is encircled by an open wreath.

One side of the wreath consists of a Northern crop while the other crop is Southern. Two swords, which are turned downwards, cross at the base of the wreath.

Liberty appears on the obverse surrounded by thirteen stars. The number of stars, which is shared by many government coins, is a reference to the original states, a symbol of union that was especially poignant at the time. Liberty&###x2019;s long hair is partially covered by a Phrygian cap, though much of it runs down the back of her neck.

At the bottom of the obverse is the year of issue, &###x201C;1863. &###x201D; This piece has some minor marks and may also have one or two major ones, thus warranting the grade of MS64 from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). It also received the designation RD, meaning that the coin still has most of it's original Mint luster.
