Civil War U. S. ARTILLERY SHORT SWORD 1832 Pattern Ames Mfg Union army

Model 1832 United States military issue " roman style" short sword. Early Ames manufacture , dated' 1836. With a hollow cast bronze hilt.

It has a rack number " 104" stamped on the cross guard. These were issued by both the US army artillery service & the US NAVY.

It is well documented that these were issued by the navy for use along the Mississippi River , on the big wheel steamer paddle boat gunships. And several hundred of this model were issued to commodore Perry , to be used by the sailors on his fleet when he " opened" Japan to the world. The rebels of the CSA often used these , as large amounts were captured from union army arsenals. A huge sword , with a big 19 inch blade & 25 inches long over all in length. The blade has a deep brown patina and scattered light salt and pepper Pitting...

The brass hilt has a pleasing patina , with the tack number 104 deeply stamped in the crossguard. The seam connecting the cast halves of the brass grip is starting to open up along the cross guard , a result from intense blows from real combat / fighting. The blade is NOT dull , nicked or. Banged up as one might expect from kids " sword fighting "..

This has only seen a few heavy' blows' near the guard , one or two inches off the blade and the users hand would have been gone! Don't pass it up!

A unique civil war era sword. Fresh out of a long time collection , first time on the market in several generations!
