CIVIL War U. S. CIVIL War Campaign Medal Made Into Ladder Badge Numbered
This is an extremely fine Civil War campaign medal that has been converted into a ladder badge with engraved campaign bars that in excellent condition. The planchet with Lincolns head remains perfect and with is a very attractive age toned patina to both the obverse and reverse sides. The rim is numbered, M. The planchet is suspended from a 7-bar ladder, executed in genuine silver with the names of Civil War campaigns hand engraved on each bar. From the top to the bottom the campaigns read, YORKTOWN, WILLIAMSBURG, GAINES MILLS, MALVERN HILL, FORT FISHER, RICHMOND, AND PETERSBURG. The WILLIAMSBURG bar has three slight dings, apparently from actual use. The top bar is with the pin and catch assemblies. The pin is missing with the catch remaining. Suspended from the reverse of the top bar is a section of original Civil War campaign medal ribbon which is used as a backing for the bars and planchet. This is a truly stunning arrangement that must certainly be one of a kind that and which was fashioned, designed and worn by the proud veteran who, as evidenced by the bars, saw active service from the beginning until the bitter end of the war.
