CIVIL WAR VERY RARE VIEW of BRIGADIER GENERAL WILLIAM F. VERY RARE VIEW of BRIGADIER GENERAL WILLIAM F. 1879 Civil War Union Brigadier General. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1838 as an officer of artillery, and fought in the Mexican border wars. When the Civil War began, he was a Major in the 5th United States Regular Artillery and was Chief of Artillery under Brigadier General Irvin McDowell during the July 1861 First Bull Run Campaign.
In August 1861, he was promoted Brigadier General, US Volunteers and assigned as Chief of Artillery for the Army of the Potomac. In the Peninsula Campaign, he supervised and fought at the Sieges of Yorktown, Mechanicsville, Gaines' Mill, White Oak Swamp and Malvern Hill. In 1864, he was Chief of Artillery for the defenses in Washington, D.
Before being transferred to the staff of Major General William T. He fought in the Atlanta Campaign, invasion of Tennessee and through the March through the Carolinas. On March 13, 1865, he was brevetted Major General in the Regular Army for his service in the war.
