Civil War Valor Hooker Medal grouping 5th NJ Vols Co H John M Sutton Gettysburg
Civil War Valor Hooker Medal grouping 5th NJ Vol Co H Cpl John M Sutton Gettysburg. Great, out of the wood work group.

Has only been in one collector's hand, and that's mine. The main Item is the For Valor Hooker's Old Division 5th NJ Vols medal inscribed on the back.

There are a handful of these medals known all more than likely issued in the late winter/ spring of 1864. John M Sutton has been mentioned in books, in particular, New Jersey at Gettysburg in the Civil War for running through enemy fire to save the Regimental colors from the advancing Confederates. It is believed that he was going to be recommended for the Medal of Honor but he flatly refused. In addition, The Civil War monument In Woodbridge NJ is said to have been carved in his likeness.

He was also a GAR post commander for many years. More info about Cpl John M Sutton is also available.

This group also includes His New Jersey Civil War with the correct serial number that is recorded to him. Other items include a piece of clay from the Mines before Petersburg with a per tag in John Sutton's hand and signed by him.

A veterans small Sterling 3rd Corps badge. A US I eagle button.

He was wounded at Petersburg so perhaps the large caliber minnie ball is the culprit? Remnants of a tattered wallet? A worn and partial 1863 soldiers prayer book that he must have carried. Look at the pics as I may be missing something.

Anyway 100% Gaurennted stellar one of kind Civil War grouping. I have to sell this group only because we had a house fire recently and I have major moving expenses, sadly.
