An Original Civil War Letter from Captain Oswald Jackson at HQ 4th Corps Camp near Yorktown, August 25, 1862 to his "dear and constant well wisher", he gently admonishes her for not writing sooner but understands the "gay crowd at Newport and it's attractions, their epicurean philosophy and frantic dissipation, moonlight walks on the cliffs,'Germania", sailing, afternoon tete de tetes, and escape from the heat of home in the Newport breezes. He describes the beach at Yorktown, blue waters with crabs and shiners, the green headland, the view of Gloucester Point. And mentions during a recent" Nor Easter" water was driven under the doors of the great halls and cottages. He reports the command is still at Yorktown, with brigades guarding Gloucester Point, Suffolk, and Monroe.

Porter's Corp has gone to Acquia to report to Burnside at Fredericksburg, Heintzelman's to Alexandria to report to Polk, with Kearney's Division en-route from there. He signs it simply "Oswald Jackson". An added note is enclosed signed by him as ADC. Major Oswald Jackson enlisted as a private with the 17th Pennsylvania Infantry in 1861, was then commissioned to 1st LT, 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry Rush's Lancers a few months later, then made Aide de Camp to General ED Keyes, taking part in the Richmond and Gettysburg Campaigns The 4pp 8 x 5 ink letter is overwritten, giving it 8 pages of content and a challenge to read but fortunately comes with a full typed transcript.
