Kepi bears the letters "WHG" (in reverse) on crown. See second provided photo for an enlargement displaying the " WHG " quite clearly. Although this fellow remains unidentified, we have researched this regiment's company "H" and found that 7 men is this company who made rank of Sergeant as follows. The 56th Virginia has a superior war record serving in numerous notable battles: 2nd Manassas, Sharpsburg, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Saylor's Creek, action around Appomattox, and numerous other engagements.
