Civil War Governor of Georgia, Mr. Authentic & Original D-Guard Confederate Bowie Knife with Fish Effigy on downturned iron quillon. Hallmarked on the ricasso by makers stamped, letter initials J.
On one side and on the other side of the blade is a stamped insignia that is tough to read through the heavy pitting. Hand forged blade is heavily pitted, but still VERY sharp. Beautiful old patina with original Southern solid handle that has the owners name and company scratched into the wood, but again it is very faint and worn making it difficult to accurately identify.
It may be something like: # H. 14 E and below it is more engraving that appears to have the number 15 in it. {See photo # 11} More research needed. Civil War CSA D-Guard Bowie Knife with Iron Guard & Fighting Fish that suggests this custom, Civil War D-Guard Bowie was custom made for a CSA sailor.
Blacksmith Handmade Iron Blade Bowie Knife and Guard with Fighting Fish Effigy! The thick iron blade is heavily pitted from old use, but the D-guard and hardwood handle are still firmly attached to the blade. The hand-forged, iron blade utilizes a 2.25 clipped point and shows original, heavy pitting.
In original, as found condition! The very heavy, rounded, all iron D-guard is tapered and turned down at the quillon with a fabulous fighting fish effigy. On a knife or sword, the crossguard, or cross-guard, also known as quillons, is a bar of metal at right angles to the blade, placed between the blade and the hilt. The crossguard was developed in the European sword around the 10th century for the protection of the wielder's hand. The blade tang passed through the end of the guard and is peened over. One-piece, wood grip slightly ovoid in cross section with heavy. 50 iron ferrule at the base. A nice Confederate knife clearly used for fighting and not just show. I must have them; and I appeal to you, as one of the most patriotic class of our fellow citizens, to make them for me immediately..
