Dug New Jersey Civil War identification shield. It is inscribed Chas Clemens - Co. This id shield was dug in the 1970's in Columbus, Kentucky.
It is brass with a brown patina. It measures 1 1/8" by 1 1/16" in size. Charles Clemens enlisted on August 26th 1863 and served until July 8th 1865 when he died of apoplexy. The 34th NJ regiment saw action in Columbus, Ky and this is when Charles would have lost his id shield. After action in Kentucky the 34th were at Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely.
New Jersey id shields are hard relics to find. The pictures are accurate as to its condition. Please look at my other auctions.
