ORIGINAL DOUBLE CHAIN ON HILT. MARKED ON SCABBARD AND ALSO ENGRAVED ON BLADE WITH EARLY AMES MAKER'S MARK FOR 1834 - 1838 PERIOD (before American Civil War). The Ames Company started production of military contract swords in 1832 with the M1832 foot artillery sword, and ended with the M1906 cavalry saber in 1906.
Ames produced more swords for the American military than any other company before or since, totaling over 200,000 swords in service by the end of the Civil War. (98.7 cm) long in scabbard. (96.8 cm) long out of scabbard. Blade is about 31 in.Exceptionally good original antique condition, shows minimum honest wear and charming indication of age. No play to hand guard. Minor chips to mother of pearl grip scales. Blade is in very good original antique condition with minor expected age wear. No pitting, no sharpening marks, couple of microscopic dings to cutting edge.
Gold gilding on scabbard and hilt parts is excellent, about 97-98% or better. One noticeable shallow dent and scratch to scabbard, don't downgrade overall appearance or functionality, mentioned just for 100% accuracy (last picture).
