English Civil War Cabasset Helmet

Popular in 16th century England and used during the Civil War, the Cabasset helmet, which was similar to the Spanish Morion was first introduced in Italy. Like its Spanish counterpart, it was worn by infantry in the pike and shot formations. The stalk-like projection on the top resembled a pear, which is how it gained its name. This example which dates from about 1640 retains its original shape and has a rolled edge rim above which are the holes which once held 14 decorative brass rivets, only two of which now remain. At the front are the two holes for the plume holder.
