English Civil War Mid 17th Century 3 Bar Lobster Tailed Pot Helmet Here we have a wonderful piece, an officers lobster tailed pot helmet from the era of the English Civil War. This one appears to be of English design and make.

It is a hefty one so likely to be used for siege work. The lobster tailed pot helmet was a design adopted from the East by the Christian nations of Europe in the early 17th century and had a rather short life but one where it was very well used all over Europe and is an iconic part of many armies equipment. Most notably the Roundheads of the English Civil War, the Reiters of the 30 Years War and the famous Polish Winged Hussars.

This seems to be English made and of very fine quality, the skull of the helmet raised from two sheets of steel and connected using a central inner spine with articulated neck plates, cheek pieces and a hinged peak visor with the characteristic three bar design with an extra two welded in place dividing the face into four quarters. The pieces are held in place using peened rivets that are in remarkable condition and all in place.

The cheek pieces are held in with leather riveted to the skull that appears to be a later replacement, one of the cheek pieces has unfortunately come off but is still with the helmet. The last articulated section of the lobster is also a replacement and presumably some of the rivets have been replaced along the cheek pieces to make the helmet suitable for display purposes. Dimensions The helmet is 16.5 inches (42 cm) from tail to peak. The helmet is 12 inches (30 cm) tall. The helmet is 10 inches (25.5 cm) wide.

The helmet weighs 3.5 Kg. Condition The helmet is in brilliant condition for its age and despite a few repairs its aged very well. The right cheek piece backing felt has detached. The last section of the lobster tail is a more modern replacement with less ageing. Some rivets have less aging than others.

There is some pitting to the inner skull. For further details and condition see pictures below...
