Extremely Rare LARGE Marked Civil War Tin MEDICAL DEPARTMENT Canteen & Straps

Very Rare Original Marked LARGE Tin Civil War MEDICAL DEPARTMENT Canteen w/Stopper. Very rare original LARGE Civil War drum type canteen, as shown. Marked "MD" in large 1 3/8 letters. Probably made to be carried on a medical/hospital wagon with the army and on the battlefield.

Could also have been used in hospital, but less likely. Probably meant to fill cups or smaller canteens. Has completely original heavy 1" black leather pliable strap, measuring about 62" long from side loop to side loop.

Has 2 strap hangers, 1 on each side. Also a 1 1/8" diameter reinforced spout x 1 1/4" high. I would guess it holds about 1/2 gallon or more. Shows use, so must have a great history and stories and background. Measures 10" diameter x 3" wide.

I can't tell if it is the original stopper, but I believe it is. Canteen has nice aged patina and appearance, with virtually no rust. Has a couple of dents, but they only add to its appearance and allure and proof of use in the field and on a medical wagon. One of rarest Civil War canteens/medical items I have ever seen. A great part of any collection, and it will display extremely well!
