Rare Original Civil War Soldier's HAVERSACK & STRAP!! The Rarest of the Rare.
M continuing to reduce my 55 year old personal collection of military items, among the best examples that you will find anywhere. This item is a very rare Civil War soldier's issue haversack as shown.
ONE OF THE HARDEST ITEMS TO FIND AS THEY WERE NOT ORIGINALLY MADE OF THE STRONGEST MATERIAL NOR INTENDED TO LAST UNTIL NOW, 165 YEARS LATER. THEY WERE ALSO USED HARD DURING BATTLE AND ON THE MARCH. I have only owned 3 in 55 years. This is a great item to add to a variety of Civil War collection and for display. Made of the tarred canvas material typically used.A great original example, complete with cover and original strap. Typical style, as shown, with tapered body and slightly curved bottom. A nice original Civil War soldier-used item for an established collection or to help a young collector start their own! Bag measures about 13" wide at the top and about 14 1/4" long. Strap is about 36" long and 1 3/4" wide.
A little dry in places. It definitely saw use, reflected by the common wear spots where the flap cover folds over (about a 4 split) and leather closing strap (missing as often seen). Nicely made, with reinforced material where the shoulder strap is, and has the reinforcing buttons. Strap is still tightly sewn to the bag on the right side, but has separated on the left side. All there, so can be re-attached if the repair is desired. Please note: this is not in bad shape overall for such a rare item. Also, none of the condition issues mentioned show from the front so still a perfect display item.
