Investment Grade Civil War Engineer Hat Device Insignia West Point
This is an original Civil War model 1851 Engineer Officer's "Castle" hat insignia, complete with both original loops for mounting on the cap. THIS IS THE VERY RARE Civil War period, West Point graduate related insignia. This Engineer's Castle insignia comes to you in a riker-mount. I find the Engineer's Castle insignia to be the most visually appealing of all the branch insignia, worn on both sides of the conflict primarily by West Point graduates, but also other Union officers trained or designated as engineers. The Engineer's Castle insignia is the most difficult of all hat insignia to find, and this example boasts both original mounting loops. I used to see these with some regularity, but they are seldom found these days, and typically command a premium over their book value when found in this excellent and complete condition. Civil War insignia are highly collectible, are very good investments that have continued to hold their value and appreciate, even when more expensive items in the Civil War collecting arena were experiencing fluctuations. Was used by both US and CS Enlisted Artillery. And Infantry troops, and was regulation from 1851 through the end of the Civil War.

They were manufactured of stamped brass with wire back loops or prongs for attaching to the crown of the hat. For Artillery, Cavalry and Infantry enlisted men is approximately 3 1/2 inches wide and 2 inches high. The Officer's versions of these insignia were also stamped brass, though they are more elaborate, with a "false embroidered" appearance that is much more elegant. Additionally, The false embroidered Officer's insignia was available in two sizes, the smaller versions designed to attach to the front of the Kepi.
