This is an amazing Model 1850 Foot Officer's Sword used in the American Civil War, manufactured by the premier sword-maker of the Civil War, Ames Manufacturing Company, Chicopee, Mass. The near-mint blade features the early block-letter "US" design used from start of production to 1861, as in 1861 forward the "US" design was in script. Everything about this sword is tight. The hilt and grip are firm to the blade, there is no movement or play at all, it is original set as examination of the pommel reveals the blade has never been removed or played with.
The blade fit to the scabbard is snug with no movement, the scabbard is firm and solid complete with original inserts and only the slightest flaking of the leather surface; one of the strongest scabbards I have seen. The blade is near-mint, 95% + full luster with frosting, never polished, never sharpened, no nicks. The "Ames Manufacturing" on the Ricasso is quite strong, I couldn't get it to come out well in the photos but it is strong. There is a small section of missing wire wrap from the grip, approximately two turns around the grip near the pommel, the remainder of the twisted wire wrap is firmly in place, there is no loose end, appears the loose end was professionally set within the grip to prevent further loss.Barely noticeable but worth mentioning. What I like most about the sword is the fact that it is in such fine condition with full luster, no looseness in the grip or scabbard, and most notably the significantly worn drag, as I have clearly photographed. Worn drags are essentially a guarantee a sword was in service and actively being worn in the field. The drag wears over time from regular contact with the ground, and any Civil War sword that was actively worn in service shows various degrees of wear to the drag.
So what we have here is a near-mint condition, US / Ames pre-war or first-year manufactured sword in full luster, tight, with a strong scabbard, with clear deep drag wear that indicates this sword was actively worn in the field through numerous campaigns and years.
