Investment Grade Civil War Pattern 1858 US Cavalry Shell Jacket, early, issued

Investment Grade Civil War Pattern 1858 US Cavalry Shell Jacket. Standard issue dark rich blue wool shell jacket with yellow/gold piping on collar and cuffs and yellow/gold trim down the front, back, and along the front and back edges, as per regulation standards of the Pattern 1858 Cavalry Shell Jacket. The jacket's buttons are original, pattern 1854 General service Eagle type, with two of the twelve front buttons being war-period replacements, as this shell jacket had been issued and used in the American Civil War, and there is one button detached from the jacket, which I have and you will receive with the jacket. The buttons are marked SCOVILLS & Co EXTRA.

This name was abbreviated to fit on small buttons. There are 11 buttons at the front (plus the detached button you will receive) and two buttons on each side of the collar, and two on each cuff, a total of 20 buttons. The lower jacket back center has both belt support pillows fully intact, see photos. The body of the jacket is in excellent condition; no moth damage at all, and only the most minor fraying at the collar top, again from use, as this was an issued shell that saw actual service during the war. The piping and trim retain their original bright yellow/gold color.

The interior lining is original, intact, and in very strong, excellent condition, with proper hallmarks for the Pattern 1858. All exterior seams are tight. Collar has a single eye and loop closure, the small hook is present, the keeper is absent, but this does not detract from the jacket. The interior is fully lined, with light brown wool material.

Sleeves are also fully lined with white muslin. The interior pocket is intact with no damage. This Jacket was made before or in the very early war years. First Rate, Museum Quality example of a Civil War Cavalry Shell Jacket.

If / when my torso mannequin arrives I will update the listing to reflect, and probably swap out an updated photo or two. This is a fine example in all regards; pre-war model, crisp sharp color, all complete and original (recall two buttons are period replacements and the collar hook keeper is absent). Note that the original dark blue color has no fading from original color, all fabric exterior and interior is very strong and in excellent condition with no damage. Among the finest Cavalry Shell Jackets to surface in some time. These Cavalry shells are getting harder and harder to find in ANY condition; this is priced to move, the price is right, don't regret letting this one get away..
