GEORGE MEADE & ULYSSES S. Official copy of a letter from General George Meade to General Ulysses S. Grant recommending the appointment of Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Wilson to the rank of Brigadier General. Following the war, he served as Commissary of Subsistence in Baltimore until 1872. OFFICIAL COPY OF A LETTER FROM GENERAL GEORGE MEADE TO GENERAL ULYSSES S. GRANT RECOMMENDING THE APPOINTMENT OF LIEUTENANT COLONEL THOMAS WILSON TO THE RANK OF BRIGADIER GENERAL. Reads in full: Sir, On my recommendation and for his services in the Field, the Brevets of Colonel and Brigadier General were conferred on Lieut. The recent order of the War Dept. Having modified and materially lessoned the value of Volunteer Brevets, conferred on Regular Officers, I have to recommend that Brevets of the same grade in the Regular Army, be now conferred on Lt. Thomas Wilson, his services in the field, at my Head Qrs.

Having been of such a nature, as to render this a matter of justice to him. BRIGADIER GENERAL WERE CONFERRED ON LIEUT.

HIS SERVICES IN THE FIELD, AT MY HEAD QRS. HAVING BEEN OF SUCH A NATURE, AS TO RENDER THIS A MATTER OF JUSTICE TO HIM. Signed by Wilson, contains two pages on a single leaf, measures 9.75 by 7.75 inches, created at the Headquarters Department of the East on September 24, 1867, and in fine condition with minor staining and evidence of mounting on the left border.
