
This was among the several generations of antiques and militaria that were on consignment. Offered is a Civil War Union Veteran Grand Army of the Republic Encampment Badges. Attributed to Bernard Matthews, a Private in the 108th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment.

Partial split at the seem, otherwise it is in excellent condition for being a piece that is 135 years old! Bernard Matthews was born in 1846 and was raised in Penfield, Monroe County, New York.
At the age of 16 Matthews enlisted as a Private in Company A, 108th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He took part in the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. At the Battle of Gettysburg Matthews was wounded on July 3rd and his right leg was amputated below the knee. For the rest of his service Matthews recovered in various military hospitals until he was discharged in 1864. He later moved and applied his trade in cities such as New York City, New York; Macon, Georgia; Charleston, South Carolina; Cincinnati, Ohio; and eventually settled down in Louisville, Kentucky where he lived the rest of his life.He passed away in 1925 and is buried in Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky. Condition: Very good to good. Some are glued to ribbon backings.
