I believe it was made out of tarred canvas. Shows honest use, but still in very good original condition. All the stitching is intact and solid. Closing strap/buckle broken as shown.Not a surprise as it would have seen a lot of opening/closing. Broken in one place and the ends are tied together. Could have happened during Civil War action and this was a field repair to enable continued use.
