The deceased owner collected many eras of U. Military memorabilia, starting his collection in the 1960's. I also have a Maryland 5th Infantry "shako" hat listed. Maryland 5th Infantry includes both the coat and trousers. Though not actually of Civil War vintage, the uniform dates to sometime soon after.

Basically, Maryland's state National Guard or state militia was re-organized in 1867 following the end of the war. Generally, the uniform is in fantastic condition.

Patina is just how it should be. Heavy wool, with a heavy quilted lining, the jacket has a very few tiny moth holes. The ornate gold-washed brass buttons incorporate the monogram of the Maryland National Guard. Hollow, some of the buttons are dented or flattened a bit. Sleeves, tails, and back all have their buttons.

A single "chest button" is missing. Heavy shoulder boards or epaulets are complete with fringes. Also some wear around the collar. White webbing holds the large brass 5th Infantry insignia around the jacket. The webbing has two "loose" ends. I'm unsure if this is intentional. Possibly to slide through the "buckle" insignia? The coat has a long split "tail" with small pockets inside. Black stripe down each outside leg. I can send trouser photos if desired. I'm limited to 12 photos in this listing. Size: Since I'd imagine the uniform is destined mainly for display, I'd say the uniform is "small" or "medium" at best. Please message me if measurements are desired. Repairs : The only repairs I see are two expertly re-sewn tears on each bicep of the coat's arms.

One is a straight tear. Both barely noticeable, the work is so well done. Markings : Various unclear ink stamps inside the collar and in the lower lining of the coat. There are also various names of soldiers both stamped and ink-written inside pockets and on the lining. I'd guess the uniform was worn by more than one individual.

Heavy wool with heavy lining, the uniform weighs almost 7 pounds. A box and careful packing should add another 2 pounds. Always happy to address questions or comments.
