Original Civil War Cavalry Officer's Sword Saber by W. If this Saber could only speak! What a story it must have to tell.

No one who has held this sword has been unmoved by it. Manufactured by respected maker W. Walscheid in Solingen Germany and imported for use in the US Civil War, the hilt of this sword carries the extra embellishment that signifies its use by an officer of cavalry. Most of the original textured fish skin grip still remains although a missing section slightly smaller than a dime allows you to see the cord wrapped around the wood grip beneath. Three loops of the twisted wire outer grip wrap remain near the pommel.

The brass portions of the hilt show a very pleasing dark patina. The Quillon has been folded over to a sharper angle, perhaps intentionally to create a slot in which to trap an opponent's blade in battle?

Just less than 21 inches of blade remain, the tip having been broken off at some point. We do know that this occurred a LONG time ago by the aged patina on the broken end.

Was this the act of frustrated officer who at the moment of defeat refused to surrender his sword intact to his enemy? Or was it broken as he and his horse fell on the field of action?
