A coatee is a type of tight fitting uniform coat or jacket. This example is black wool with red trim on the chest, collar, cuffs, and tails.
The lining is a quilted, light brown polished cotton. The jacket has 37 large (23 mm diameter) buttons with 27 on the front and 10 on the tails. Each of these buttons say NEW HAMPSHIRE VOL. The jacket also has 8 small (15 mm diameter) buttons with 2 on each cuff and 4 on the collar. These buttons have exactly the same design and Scovill backmarks as the large buttons.
The jacket also has 1 additional small (15 mm diameter) button on each cuff. These buttons have an "NA" monogram in the center and are marked Chisholm. There are 45 buttons in total making this the most complete coatee we have ever seen in nearly fifty years. This coatee is in very good condition with scattered small moth holes to the sleeves and body and some tears to the lining. It has a printed label sewn to the inside reading HENRY B.
