This is an original, I believe, Civil War XIII Corps Badge or rather a cut of the badge It is made of wool with nap and is backed with a tightly woven stiffened fabric. This badge measures 2 5/8" tall by 2 1/2" wide and is in unused condition. Again I turn to Civil War Corps Badges and Other Related Awards, Madges, Medals of the Period, by Stanley S.
That in the year 1865 or 1866 Comrade Walter B. Scales, of Chicago, formerly Adjutatnt-General of the Thirteenth Army Corps, called a meeting of the comrades of the corps residing in and around Chicago, for the purpose of forming an organization or society to be known as the Thirteenth Army Corps Association. The meeting was held in Old Metropolitan Hall, and was presided over by Walter B. There was a large attendence at the meeting. An organization was formed and a badge was adopted at the meeting to be known as the Thirteenth Corps Badge.
An electrotype or die was made, and a cut of the same sent to each member present at the meeting. " Photo three "represents a badge that was adopted by several members of the Thirteenth Corps and worn by them during the war, but never came into general use.
