The popular French design of the period. The brass guard is in wonderful condition with very little marring. The pommel is matching design and has not been re-pinged. Overall, the guard is very clean and undamaged. The grip is gray shageen with twisted brass wire wrapping.
There is some wear to the grip from use, however, all of the shagreen is present. The original red leather washer is present. Blade : The blade is longer than most swords of this style, measuring 33 inches! The blade is very clean with no pitting or staining. The etching is clear (see photos) with military trophies and patriotic motif -- American eagle with shield containing stars & stripes, ribbon with E Pluribus Unum, US, flags, floral sprays, etc. No manufacture markings are are apparent, but the blade spine is marked "IRON PROOF" -- I believe this is a common Walschied Solingen marking for the export market. The leather scabbard is a modern replacement with some minor distressing to give a period look.Otherwise, the scabbard is very solid and shows well with the sword. Please see all photos for details. This sword is appropriately priced matched with a modern scabbard -- nonetheless, it will enhance any Civil War collection/display.
