Considered one of the most masterful generals in American History, if not World History, Grant led the Union Army to victory in the Civil War and accepted General Robert E.Lee's surrender of the Confederate Army at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. It was on the wings of his heroic popularity, next to only that of President Lincoln's that catapulted him to the Presidency in 1869, where he served 2 terms overseeing the reconstruction of the South and credited with the creation of the Justice Department initially to oversee the enforcement of Federal Laws in the South.
