ORIGINAL TAR or OIL CLOTH CIVIL WAR or EARLIER MILITIA HAVERSACK, Ca 1840-1865

General Description : A nice classic mid-19th century style tar or oil cloth haversack. The haversack measures approximately 11x11 inches/29x29 cm. Overall, the condition is good -- there are two small 1/4 inch holes near the bottom from wear.

There also is minor wear on each side where the cover flap folds. The haversack has faded brownish-orange (probably once red) cloth string piping at the seams -- the original seams are solid with no splits or repairs. The flap edge once had felt or other cloth edging -- only a few remnants remain on the underside. Also, only part of the cloth or string button loop is apparent, but it can be easily replaced, if wanted.

The original single flat pewter flap button remains securely attached to the haversack front. Inside the haversack is a brown polished cotton liner -- see photos. As to be expected, the liner is dirty and stained from use, but is remarkably in good condition with little physical damage.

The leather straps -- see photos -- are flexible and are hand sewn to the haversack. The straps are discolored from age -- faded gray, but remain sturdy. The buckle is roller style and may (or not) be a later replacement.

Overall, this is a very reasonably priced mid-19th century haversack in good condition. This item will add greatly to any serious Civil War or earlier military collectors' display. And are not for sale separately.
