Original U. S. Civil War 1855 Pattern Cavalry Shell Jacket
This is an original 1855 Cavalry Shell jacket. These jackets were worn by the enlisted Cavalry Soldiers from 1855 until the early 1870s.

The Horse Soldier is a well respected and reputable dealer in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. The body of this jacket is in excellent condition.

There is no visible moth damage and only small amounts of wear. Shoulders have light surface dirt from storage. Though the body and lining of the jacket are original all the yellow piping was replaced by a costume company sometime in the 1880s. Both pillows are also missing off the back but there is no sign of them ever having been present.

Most of the buttons are tin backed and have been reapplied. All exterior seams are tight. Interior is lined with a brown wool material. There is a vertical breast pocket along the left edge of the liner seam. Liner shows moderate to heavy wear in the right body and shoulder area.

The right body has a poorluly sewn repair and there are stress separations in the shoulder. The left armpit has some stress separations and the left body also has a poorly sewn repair or alteration.

Sleeve linigs appear to be original. The right sleeve lining has three dots and a worn size number "3". There is also a blurred and unreadable inspector's mark.

There also appears to be a faint name. Stamped in two places in the back are "UCI" in a square over "SIZE 40". If you would like any other photos please let me know what you want to see and I will send them to you. Some of the buttons are later examples dating from after the Civil War but can easily be replaced with the appropriate ones. Overall this is an amazing coat that actually appears to have seen some service and then was later acquired by a costume company, "UCI".

Costume companies often bought original uniforms to rent to production companies for movies or plays. Don't miss this opportunity to add a very nice uniform to your collection. I will also entertain serious offers. Civil War 1855 Pattern Cavalry Shell Jacket" is in sale since Sunday, March 24, 2019.
