The 82nd Pennsylvania Infantry was a notable combat unit. James Neiler rose from the rank of private to command of the 82nd as Lt Colonel by 1864.

The original Civil War Commission issued by the State of Pennsylvania promoting Nailor to Captain of C Company, 82nd PVI, Feb 16, 1864, given at Harrisburg and signed by Governor Andrew Curtin. The 17 x 14 commission bears the illus Seal of the State and also a red applied State seal. Age stains, edge wear and archival repairs at the fold, Overall Good. Comes w service & unit info- the 82nd lost half its men at Cold Harbor, and fought at Sailors Creek. Colonel Neiler served 4 years, enlisting as a private in 1861.
