Offered is an original, historic, & collectible old newspaper: THE LIBERATOR, Boston, May 23, 1862. Rare anti-slavery title Hunter's emancipation order. This is the famous anti-slavery newspaper by famed abolitionist publisher William Lloyd Garrison. Page 3 has nice reporting concerning the General David Hunter "emancipation" controversy, in which he issued an emancipation proclamation for selected states without authority. The proclamation is printed here & signed in type: David Hunter , Major General Commanding. This issue includes the document signed in type by the President: Abraham Lincoln , negating Hunter's proclamation.

There is also a lengthy editorial on this situation: President Lincoln's Veto of Gen. Hunter's Emancipation Order" (small worm hole here affects just 2 letters) and another: "General Hunter's Order. Other interesting reports in this issue include: "The Colored Population of the District of Columbia" "Rejoicing Over the Abolition of Slavery in the District of Columbia" "Emancipation Jubilee--Celebration by the Colored People of New York" "The [Blacks] of Port Royal" "Enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Law in the District" and much more.
